Business Development Services
Cultivating Iraq’s Entrepreneurial Spirit
The entrepreneurial spirit is a natural resource for Iraq. The country that prides itself as the “cradle of civilization” has been known for centuries for its vibrant commerce and successful agriculture. As Iraq proceeds through the painful transition from a state-dominated economy to a market-driven one, it must cultivate this spirit to equip Iraqi entrepreneurs with modern business management tools vital for the progress of the country. We respond to this need by supporting and strengthening the Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), five of which were created under the USAID-funded Izdihar project and the others under the USAID-Tijara program. To date, 15 SBDCs are fully operational and providing training and consulting services to entrepreneurs on how to start or expand a business and have begun to help them link up with microfinance institutions and banks as an integral part of the program. The Business Development Services component of the USAID-Tijara program focuses on establishing and expanding the existing network of Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) throughout Iraq. Our Business Development Services team works with all Small Business Development Centers to diversify the training curriculum and expand their menu of services to the local business communities. The ultimate goal is that through an extended, demand-driven product and service portfolio the SBDCs will achieve financial sustainability such that when the Tijara Provincial Economic Growth program is concluded, all Centers can continue to operate independently of outside funds. Visit the website of Small Business Development Centers in Iraq to learn more about what these organizations can offer.
